Premier League: August 18th

Wigan 3-0 Sunderland

Wigan moved top of the Premier League after consigning Roy Keane's Sunderland to their first defeat of the season.
Emile Heskey hooked a cross home with his right foot before Danny Landzaat doubled their lead with a penalty after Danny Collins fouled Antoine Sibierski.
Russell Anderson brought down Heskey for Sibierski to score Wigan's second penalty in the space of seven minutes.
Michael Chopra and Daryl Murphy were both denied by Chris Kirkland saves but the Latics undoubtedly deserved to win.

Tottenham 4-0 Derby

Darren Bent got his first league goal for Spurs as they strolled to victory over Derby to ease the pressure on manager Martin Jol at White Hart Lane.
The Dutchman's position has come under intense scrutiny of late following two defeats, but Steed Malbranque eased any nerves with the opener from 20 yards.
He then curled home the second before Jermaine Jenas slipped in the third.
Gary Teale's 70th-minute shot was the visitors' only effort on goal and Bent wrapped up an easy win from a yard.

Reading 1-0 Everton

Everton were knocked off the top of the Premier League table on goal difference as they lost for the first time this season to hard-working Reading.
Stephen Hunt fired the first-half winner when he lashed the ball past Tim Howard just before the interval.
Everton looked more dangerous after the break with Andrew Johnson going close.
But the Royals' extra work-rate paid dividends as they survived a late surge by the visitors to seal their first victory of the season.

Portsmouth 3-1 Bolton

Portsmouth came from behind to defeat Bolton and increase the pressure on boss Sammy Lee, whose team have yet to pick up a point after three games.
Nicolas Anelka shot through David James's legs to put Bolton in front but Kanu hooked the ball into the goal from six yards to equalise.
John Utaka then burst forward from 45 yards before slipping the ball home.
And Matthew Taylor scored a late penalty after Gerald Cid was penalised for a trip on Kanu.

Newcastle 0-0 Aston Villa

Aston Villa frustrated Newcastle in Sam Allardyce's first home game in charge to open their account for the season.
Villa boss Martin O'Neill set Newcastle a defensive problem they were never able to solve, despite Michael Owen's return from the bench.
Defender David Rozehnal was denied by Scott Carson in one of the few clear-cut chances Newcastle created.
Villa defender Martin Laursen's header was blocked by Steve Harper, who also tipped away Nigel Reo-Coker's shot.

Fulham 1-2 Middlesbrough

Lee Cattermole's late strike earned Middlesbrough their first points of the season with a win at Fulham.
Fulham took a costly lead when Brian McBride dislocated his knee in scoring.
A howler from Tony Warner handed £6m striker Mido a goal on his debut, when the ball squirmed out of the Fulham keeper's grasp.
Cattermole's neat finish put Boro ahead, but Fulham were denied a point when David Healy's effort was ruled not to have crossed the line.

Birmingham 0-1 West Ham

West Ham notched their first win of the season as they beat Birmingham courtesy of a Mark Noble penalty.
Midfielder Noble was West Ham's best player and scored from the spot after Blues keeper Colin Doyle rashly upended Craig Bellamy.
The Hammers might have had a spot-kick earlier on when Stephen Kelly appeared to impede Kieron Dyer.
Noble had also hit the post with a free-kick against a Blues side lacking the quality to match their effort.

News Headlines 9th August

Ban on livestock movements eased

A ban on livestock movements brought in following an outbreak of foot-and-mouth in Surrey has been eased. Following the midnight restriction changes, farmers outside the county's surveillance zone can take livestock to slaughter and dispose of dead animals.
Meanwhile, culling has been ordered on a third farm, next to the second farm already affected, on suspicion that the disease could be developing there.
A European Union export ban on British meat and livestock remains in place.

Two die in RAF helicopter crash

Two people have died and 10 others have been injured following an RAF helicopter crash in North Yorkshire. The helicopter came down some time before 2130 BST on Wednesday near the Hudswell Grange wooded area to the west of the Catterick Garrison army base.
A Ministry of Defence (MoD) spokesman said some of casualties taken to hospitals in Middlesbrough and Newcastle were "walking wounded".
He said that a board of inquiry would investigate the cause of the crash.

Passenger 'hid monkey under hat'

A man has been questioned by police at LaGuardia airport in New York after smuggling a monkey onto a flight from Florida by hiding it under his hat.
Passengers spotted the animal when it climbed out and perched on the man's ponytail, Spirit Airlines spokeswoman Alison Russell told reporters.
Ms Russell said the monkey - a marmoset - spent the remainder of the flight in the man's seat and was well-behaved.

Endeavour shuttle heads to space

The space shuttle Endeavour has begun an 11 to 14 day assembly mission to the International Space Station (ISS). The shuttle blasted off as planned at 2336 BST (1836 EDT) on Wednesday from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
The mission is the second of four that Nasa plans this year to finish the $100bn (£49.1bn) space station before the shuttle fleet retires in 2010.
On board was Barbara Morgan, once the reserve behind Christa McAuliffe, who died in the Challenger shuttle in 1986.

Liverpool unveil new stadium plan

Liverpool have released the design for their new 60,000 all-seater stadium.
The ground, which is scheduled to open in 2010, is part of a £300m investment by the club and has the ability to increase capacity to more than 75,000.

The architect is American company HKS, which is also designing the Dallas Cowboys' new stadium.

Chief executive Rick Parry told the BBC: "The stadium will send a message out that we want to be best on the pitch and the best off the pitch."

West Ham could make bid for Dyer

West Ham manager Alan Curbishley has refused to rule out a move for Newcastle winger Kieron Dyer.
Magpies boss Sam Allardyce has admitted Dyer, 28, could leave St James' Park because of family reasons.

Curbishley said: "I'm looking in all areas, and it's not very often that a club says that a player is available.

"Kieron wants to leave Newcastle and we have been linked with him. I have one eye on everything until that transfer window closes - so we'll have to see."

He added: "We are actively looking to strengthen the squad and we have to replace those who have left."

Leeds Utd face goalkeeping crisis

Leeds United will have to start the season without a goalkeeper unless their transfer embargo is lifted.
Deals have been lined up for Brondby keeper Casper Ankergren and Watford's Scott Loach but they cannot sign while Leeds remain in limbo.
The club is relying on the Football League giving them special dispensation to bolster their squad.
And assistant boss Gus Poyet told BBC Sport: "I hope we can sign someone - if not I am not sure who will play there."
Each member club has a share in the Football League but the League's board has withheld the transfer of Leeds' share to Ken Bates after he struck a deal to buy back the club from administrators KPMG on 11 July.
It means Leeds - who did not pay their players for June - are still unable to add to their threadbare squad ahead of the start of the new season on 11 August.

Bristol City close in on Trundle

Swansea striker Lee Trundle could be on the verge of joining Bristol City, who are believed to have met his valuation.
Speculation grew when Trundle, 30, was left out of Swansea's 1-1 friendly draw at Port Talbot on Wednesday.
The Swans rejected a move for Trundle from new Championship side the Robins last week, and turned down a £750,000 bid from Sheffield Wednesday in 2005.
But it is believed that the Ashton Gate side have returned with an offer thought to be close to £1m.

Young completes medical at Boro

Luke Young is poised to complete a £2.5m move to Middlesbrough from Charlton after passing a medical.
England defender Young watched Middlesbrough win at Darlington in a friendly on Tuesday as he waited to complete the formalities of the deal.
The 28-year-old has made over 200 appearances for the Addicks since signing from Spurs for £4m in 2001.
Charlton manager Alan Pardew said he would not prevent Young from leaving The Valley for a Premiership club.
He said: "I've got a lot of time for Luke and I appreciate he wants to play in the Premier League.

Hearts and Hibs chasing Naismith

Hearts and Hibernian are in discussions with Kilmarnock about the transfer of Scotland striker Steven Naismith from Rugby Park, BBC Sport understands.
Rangers manager Walter Smith said this week that the Glasgow outfit had dropped their interest after the two clubs could not agree a transfer fee.
Now the two Edinburgh clubs have stepped up their interest.
But Rangers remain the 20-year-old's favoured club and he might reject a proposed move to any of their rivals.
The Ibrox club have been chasing Naismith all summer, having four bids rejected before withdrawing their final offer of £1.5m.
Kilmarnock are thought to want upwards of £1.7m.

Football news

Sven to tempt Richardson to City
Sven Goran-Eriksson has taken on hard-man Roy Keane with an audacious bid to hijack Sunderland's £5.5m bid for Manchester United winger Kieran Richardson. The new City manager, who handed the 22-year-old his England debut, is trying to persuade the player to move to United's rivals. Eriksson is ready to splash out a sizeable chunk of the £50m transfer budget he has been promised by new City owner, Thaksin Shinawatra, while Keane knows all about Richardson, having played alongside him at Old Trafford.

Arrest order as Tevez flies to Man Utd
The Carlos Tevez affair took another twist last night when an arrest order was issued for the businessman in charge of the West Ham striker just hours before it was announced that the player was close to joining Manchester United. A federal judge in Brazil has charged Kia Joorabchian with money-laundering at the end of a two-year investigation. The development overshadowed the news that Tevez is expected to fly into Manchester on Tuesday - two days after playing in the Copa America final for Argentina against Brazil - to undergo a medical with a view to joining the Premier League champions on a two-year loan deal.

Sparta Rotterdam have completed the capture of Nantes midfielder Nourdin Boukhari. Boukhari, who played for Sparta for 2 seasons until 2002, is back at the club following a 5 year absence. The 27 year old's previous form for Sparta earned him a transfer to Dutch giants Ajax before he joined Nantes for free last summer. After a good start to life in Ligue 1 the midfielder returned to Holland on loan with AZ Alkmaar and is now back in the country permanently. Nantes were happy to offload Boukhari's wages following relegation and he has now signed a 3 year deal with Sparta.

Rangers sign N. Ireland international Roy Carroll. The Ulsterman has signed a one year deal following his release by West Ham. Gers manager Walter Smith knows Carroll from their time together at Man Utd and he wasted little time in sealing a deal for the 29 year old. Carroll will compete with Allan McGregor and Graeme Smith for the number one jersey at Ibrox.

Almeria have added a 4th new face to their team with the capture of young forward Natalio from Castellon. The Andalusian club are busy preparing for life in the top flight next term and were very active in the transfer market thus far in the summer. They have already completed deals for Felipe Melo, Aitor Lopez Rekarte and Juanma Ortiz and have now added a new goalscorer to their ranks. Natalio, 22, was widely regarded as one of the most promising striking prospects outside of La Primera having netted 16 times for a struggling Castellon side in La Segunda last term. He was reported to have caught the eye of Sevilla, however Almeria have now stepped in to conclude a deal and will hope he can continue his goalscoring exploits at the highest level.

Andy Todd signed a 2 year deal with Derby County. The 32 year old was eager to leave Blackburn Rovers and he has now sealed a transfer to Pride Park after the 2 clubs agreed terms. A number of clubs that included Birmingham, West Bromwich Albion and Sunderland had shown an interest, however Todd has opted for Derby, where his father Colin had a number of successful seasons as manager and player. Todd signed a deal until 2009 and will hope to help Derby maintain their Premier League status. "Andy is pleased to sign for Derby," his agent Peter Harrison confirmed. "Derby are a good club and Andy is looking forward to playing at Pride Park."

Dunfermline have completed the signing of winger Kevin Harper on a 2 year deal. Harper, who spent time on loan at Carlisle and Walsall last year, was out of contract at Stoke City. The move sees Harper back in Scottish football for the 1st time since 1998 following his transfer to Derby from Hibs. Harper is vastly experienced having played for Portsmouth, Norwich and Leicester before his transfer to The Britannia in 2005. Dunfermline will be hoping the capture of the 31 year old will boost their prospects of a swift SPL return after relegation last term.

horoscopes for july

Aries
July 14, 2007
Be careful not to be too cavalier today, dear Aries. It would be wise to adopt a more serious tone than you would normally. You might have the inclination to think outloud, but people are going to take you very literally. Make sure that you say things that you actually mean. Your attention to fashion and pop culture may be in conflict with a force that is asking you to focus on things of deeper spiritual value.

Taurus
July 14, 2007
You have the sensitivity to pick up on what is going on in every situation you encounter today. What you are apt to find are powerful emotions coming into conflict with extremely strong opinions. Welcome to the battle between the head and the heart. On this day you may be more apt to side with the heart. Realize that this arena is quite heated, and that the forces at work are extremely stubborn.

Gemini
July 14, 2007
The fantastic fantasy world that you have built for yourself is a pleasure to delight in, dear Gemini. People frolic in your world and have a grand time. Your presence delights people with pleasure. Today, however, this world may be threatened by harsh realities that are coming in the form of electronic information. This force is powerful, and apt to be quite erratic and spontaneous. Be prepared to stand your ground.

Cancer
July 14, 2007
It may be difficult to stay grounded today, with all the information flying around in the air and all the emotion toiling in your heart. Try not to take things too seriously, dear Cancer. This is the key to maintaining a level head throughout the day. Do things with passion, and take care of any detective work that needs to be done. There are important facts coming to you from unexpected sources.

Leo
July 14, 2007
You may be getting pushed around by two very powerful camps today, dear Leo. Since you are the kind, diplomatic, and sensitive one, you make the perfect target for those who are more abrasive and opinionated. You may want to side with the cold hard facts which are being presented to you, although there is a great deal of emotional power working to stir up the pot. Things may not be as clear as they seem at first glance.

Virgo
July 14, 2007
You are apt to feel a bit more on the wild side today, dear Virgo. There is a wave of powerful energy that is working to give strength to your ego and self-confidence. Use this boost to the best of your ability. You will need it. There is a strong, fact-orientated force that is working to combat your aims, and you will find that it is equally powerful and stubborn. Cut through the fantasy and uncover the truth.

Libra
July 14, 2007
A good tactic for you today would be to convert your fears into motivation for positive action. There is a great deal of energy at your disposal, dear Libra, so don't waste it. Be aware that this is one of those times in which the smallest comment or insult may set off a huge chain reaction of misinformation or battles. People are quite emotionally charged, so be careful where you step.

Scorpio
July 14, 2007
You are likely to be faced with conflicting reports today, dear Scorpio. Information may be tainted with a great deal of emotion, so be careful about going with the the most obvious choice. You may be getting secretly pigeonholed into a place that you don't want to be. Heed the internal warnings that you receive. This is a good day to do things with passion. Take care of any detective work that needs to be done.

Sagittarius
July 14, 2007
You may be seduced by fantastic promises that offer wonderful things and fanciful rewards. But beware of things with lots of bells and whistles, dear Sagittarius. There may be a great deal of talk, but not much to substantiate such wonderful claims. Don't be surprised if people with intense emotions are stepping up to put in their two cents about how you should run your life. Don't forget who is boss.

Capricorn
July 14, 2007
People are apt to be quite emotional when it comes to the appearance they wish to project today, dear Capricorn, so be careful where you step. It is your job to see through the trendy makeup and fashion that hides the true personalities of the people who insist on wearing these masks. The key is to not be fooled by those who are hiding behind a facade that is built more by society than by them.

Aquarius
July 14, 2007
Dear Aquarius, don't be surprised if some of your fantasies and dreams are put on trial today by a harsh force that cuts right to the truth of the matter. People are apt to be extra passionate about things, and most aren't going to be impressed with fairytale-type plans. You can try your normal approach of simply ramming straight ahead with your plans, but a better approach might be to think first and be more strategic with your moves.

Pisces
July 14, 2007
You are at an emotionally climactic point right now, dear Pisces, and you might find that harsh opposition is coming at you for no clear reason. There is a stubborn, strong force that is oppressive today and you should be aware that the more rigid you are in your viewpoint, the harder it will be for any resolution to be made at all. Compromise is an essential virtue of the day

Horoscopes for july

Aries
July 13, 2007
Today you might find yourself daydreaming about faraway places and perhaps toying with the idea of taking a long vacation by air to a place you've always wanted to visit. This is not a good day to make definite plans, however, and you're not likely to be inclined to do that right now anyway. Love matters may take an unexpected turn, as a spiritual bond seems to be forming between you and a potential romantic partner.

Taurus
July 13, 2007
You might look around your house today and think of some new and exciting ways in which you could spruce it up a little. Perhaps some new paint, or wallpaper, or carpet, or even some small art object could make a big difference, and you'll want to try it. A romantic partner could spend a lot of time working on this with you and this might well bring you closer together. Have fun!

Gemini
July 13, 2007
A party or group meeting of some kind could take place nearby and you might decide to attend. You might feel that you have one foot in this world and one in another. The floodgates of intense communication could open up between you and a close friend or love partner. A tight spiritual bond exists between you, and you'll really feel the effects of it at this time. It'll be almost as if you can read each other's minds!

Cancer
July 13, 2007
This is a great day to develop any latent talents you've been wanting to explore particularly those involving the arts. You might want to try your hand by working with friends who have the same talent, and this could lead not only to some good advice but bring the two of you closer as well. However, this isn't a good day to deal with practical paperwork, so let that sort of thing go for a little while.

Leo
July 13, 2007
Today you might be feeling especially artistic, particularly with regard to the visual arts. A lot of exalted ideas could come your way perhaps inspired by great masters of the past. This is a great day to attend a concert or play, or stroll through an art gallery. Friends who share your interest might want to accompany you, so call them up. Take time to write down your thoughts, as you'll want to remember them later. Enjoy!

Virgo
July 13, 2007
You're a deep thinker by nature and today your mind may not be in this world. Books on psychology and metaphysics might be appealing. Churches, meditation centers and other places with a spiritual orientation could seem especially attractive. You might attend a program or workshop there, but mostly you'll just want to be alone with your thoughts and meditations. Write down any insights that come to you, as you'll want to remember them later.

Libra
July 13, 2007
Group events taking place at churches, meditation centers, and other places with a spiritual orientation could draw you near. You might want to attend a service or program at one of them. Don't be surprised if some profound insights come to you that shed some light on a current situation you might be dealing with. Write them down, otherwise they might escape you later.

Scorpio
July 13, 2007
It is likely that the previous few days have been especially hectic and today you're apt to entertain a few daydreams of getting away from it all. Perhaps there is another field that you've been wanting to pursue, and you might actually entertain some serious thoughts about it right now. Don't make any plans, however, until you're back in the material world. You might feel too fanciful to be your usual practical self.

Sagittarius
July 13, 2007
Today your intellect is likely to be more inclined than usual to explore fields that seem a bit speculative. Ancient spiritual rites, prehistory, or strange stories could be on your mind and you might seek out books covering these subjects. Usually you tend to be skeptical about such things, but at this time you want to learn about them. Hang onto your logic and learn what you can! At the very least you'll enjoy yourself!

Capricorn
July 13, 2007
Some intense dreams could visit you tonight. Keep a notebook and pen by your bedside as it's important to remember these dreams. You would want to visualize every single detail. In the morning you might want to reflect on their meaning. They could give rise to new knowledge about yourself, a new spiritual revelation, or artistic inspiration. Books could be of particular assistance in understanding what your dreams are telling you.

Aquarius
July 13, 2007
Social events involving the arts or spiritual studies could take place today, and new people who share your interests could appear on the scene. Love and romance could take on a fairy tale aura. You might see both current and potential love partners through rose-colored glasses, seeing only their endearing traits. This is fine, and you should enjoy it as long as you don't get caught up in unrealistic expectations. They're human just like everyone else.

Pisces
July 13, 2007
Daydreams about your future could take up a lot of your time today. Inspiration which could give a real boost to projects you've been working on could also come your way. These might involve artistic endeavors, or perhaps some sprucing up that you want to do around your house and yard. Working together might bring you closer to friends and family members, and possibly a love partner. Conversations with them could take an unexpected turn.

updated transfers

CARLOS TEVEZ TO MAN UTD.
The Argentina striker will return to England after playing in Sunday's Copa America final against Brazil to undergo a medical at Old Trafford.
Personal terms have already been agreed and United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is confident the protracted saga is coming to a close.
Ferguson said on Thursday night: "I think we have got the player - we think he is our player and are very hopeful.
"Everyone was excited when we thought we could get Tevez. He's exciting, his form is fantastic and at 23 he can get better."
Manchester United have agreed an initial loan deal for Tevez with the option of a permanent transfer, which could be worth over £30m.

BABEL TO SIGN FOR LIVERPOOL
Liverpool have confirmed that Ryan Babel will sign a five-year contract at Anfield on Friday

A statement on the Ajax website, www.ajax.nl read: "The attacker (Babel), who had a contract at Ajax up to July 1 2010, has signed an agreement for five years."
Babel, 20, starred for Holland in their recent European Under-21 Championship success on home soil.
Reds chief executive Rick Parry confirmed on Wednesday they had been given permission to talk to the player by Ajax, who was included in Holland's senior squad for the 2006 World Cup and said they hoped to reach agreement with the Amsterdam side "very shortly".

TORRES SIGNS SIX-YEAR REDS DEAL
Fernando Torres has signed a six-year deal at Liverpool after joining from Atletico Madrid for a fee thought to be in the region of £20million.
The 23-year-old striker passed a medical at the club's Melwood training ground but briefly flew back to his homeland to say an emotional goodbye before completing the formalities of the transfer.
Torres, speaking through an interpreter, said at his Anfield unveiling: "I'm very happy to be joining the club.

VORONIN COMPLETES REDS SWITCH
Liverpool have officially announced the capture of Ukraine striker Andriy Voronin.
It was already known the former Bayer Leverkusen star, 27, would move to Anfield and he now joins record signing Fernando Torres in beefing up the Reds' attack.
Voronin, who was out of contract at the Bundesliga side, helped Leverkusen overcome Blackburn in the UEFA Cup last season.
Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez believes Voronin will give him a variety of options up front.
He told the club's official wesbite, www.liverpoolfc.tv: "He is a player with pace and good movement.
